Second CAC Lecture on Robert Oppenheimer

Second CAC Lecture on Robert Oppenheimer held on April 22, 2019

April 22, 1904, Robert Oppenheimer was born and “everything went up the smoke”. He changed the fundamentals of warfare. He completely flipped the scenario of wars and brought down an entire nation by his scientific leadership on its knees in a matter of a few hours. In a way he was responsible for ending conventional and long drawn wars. His contributions led to a new era of “disarmament” and nuclear “anti-proliferation as well as to the concept of war to end wars and war for everlasting peace.

He was an able physicist who introduced many new ideas like the gravitational collapse of a massive body to what would be called a black hole. He was also a tragic hero caught in the midst of petty politics of 50’s and who missed the Nobel prize.

We celebrate his life on April 22, 2019, 115 years after the birth of a polyglot and an irrepressible investigator of life.
