International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore: Profile of Institutional Member of BITES

A deemed-to-be-university, IIITB is an autonomous institute and has been at the forefront of IT education and innovation. It is a registered not-for-profit society funded jointly by Government of Karnataka and the IT Industry. More than 3,000 students have graduated from the Institute since 1999, and serve in over fifty well-known IT product and services companies. The Institute alumni have also founded nearly 60 enterprises. The institute follows a broad academic philosophy with the 3-tier approach of programme, course and teaching and prides itself in setting the highest standards in the selection of its faculty members. The faculty members at the Institute boast of work/research and teaching experience in leading institutions around the world and have published papers in over 60 journals, both national and international.

IIITB focuses on research and it is divided into various domains comprising multiple faculty members, who manage their own lab. Each research lab has its own custom infrastructure to suit research agenda. Many research projects taken up by the institute are funded by the Government of Karnataka.

The institute has three research centers – namely Centre for Information Technology and Public Policy (CITAPP), E- Health Research Center (EHRC) and Machine Intelligence and Robotics (MINRO) centre. CITAPP focuses on the policy challenges and the organizational demands made by technological innovation, interactions between technology and society, particularly how technological advances address the needs of under-served communities. It seeks to provide a means to nurture and transform public policy through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) by engaging various stakeholders of the society.

EHRC is an interdisciplinary research centre that spreads across all areas of research interests in IIITB. The centre is an outcome of the research initiative to do applied research in the use of ICTs to meet the healthcare needs of the under-served and marginal population in India and similar regions across the world. It focuses on affordability, accessibility and availability of technology solutions covering [medical] devices, [health] data, and delivery [platforms and models].

MINRO is envisaged to be a centre of excellence research and education institution dedicated to the study of machine intelligence and robotics and its applications in the Indian context. It also houses a 2000 sq ft state-of-the-art Open Experience Centre. The Centre’s activities can be divided into three major focus areas: Education, Research, and Government.

IIITB also has an on-campus Innovation Centre, a hub for ICT research, innovation and entrepreneurship. The centre supports and incubates new ventures from startup entrepreneurs working on innovative ideas. It promotes commercialization of Intellectual Property generated by faculty and students by incubating their ventures. The centre has a close association with the industry which has R&D centres for collaborative research. IIITB also offers short-term courses for industry professionals. Supported through government funding and CSR initiatives of the corporate companies, the centre has a vibrant end-to-end ecosystem.

The institute has an active and vibrant international student exchange programme. Faculty work with their counterparts in leading international academic universities funded by organisations such as National Science Foundation, USA (NSF), European Union (EU), Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, Netherlands (NWO), Research Councils UK (RCUK) and the World Bank. Students get a chance to visit international universities and work on research projects.

Full time courses offered by IIITB include M.Tech. (Computer Science), M.Tech. (ECE), M.Sc. (Digital Society), Integrated M.Tech. (Computer Science), Integrated M.Tech. (ECE), PhD, Master of Science by Research. The institute also offers continuing professional education, an online programme, that includes Sponsored Degree Programmes, PG Diploma Programmes and Certificate Programmes.

Over the years, IIITB has recorded 100% placement with major companies in the areas of product, hardware, R&D, BFSI and academic consistently visiting the campus. Students have also bagged international offers with record salaries.
